The Christmas to New Year’s Holidays begin on December 7th with the Celebration of Purisima honoring the Virgin Mary and end on January 6th with Three Kings Day. The entire holiday season falls during the “Summer Vacation” observed by the Nicaraguan school system.

Throughout the season, scheduled library activities were posted on the white board in front of the library. There were decorations to make, Christmas puppets to create and a tree to trim. The libary also sponsored nativity story hours, and a photo session. Children used their Christmas-themed photos to create gift cards for their parents, and they also created other small crafts to give as gifts.

Several of the local children volunteered to bring gifts of donated stuffed animals to Christmas fiestas in the surrounding communities, which were sponsored by the Biblioteca Movil project. Following tradition, the gift givers came dressed as Mary and Joseph and the three kings. The fiestas, including gifts, refreshments and a piñata, have become a mobile project tradition.

As the first lending library in Nicaragua, staff of the SJDS Biblioteca are frequently called upon to provide advice and assistance to new libraries elsewhere in the country. Along with the HJH Libraries for All program, the biblioteca recently helped found a new library in a trade school in Cardenes, a small town of 2000 residents near San Juan del Sur.

Peace Corp Volunteers Salome Phillmann, and Millie Tillman had seen the success of the HJH Library in a Box protocol in San Juan, and submitted an application to start their own library within the school. Their effort was also backed by three prominent members of that community, including school director Jacobo Sanchez.

The HJH Libraries for All program approved this application and has provided the needed supplies and a seed collection of 300 books.

In November, 2006, Tillman and Phillmann, accompanied by two volunteer staff members from the Cardenas Community, traveled to San Juan del Sur several times to receive training from the staff of the SJDS Biblioteca.

During the Nicaraguan summer vacation, school staff and library volunteers are busily working to set up the library using the materials and expertise provided by the SJDS Biblioteca Movil and the HJH program. When school resumes in February, the new library will begin lending books to students taking classes at the school. The staff of the San Juan del Sur Biblioteca greatly appreciated this opportunity to increase the availability of informational resources to Nicaraguan students.

5th anniversary celebration held on November 11th included gifts for the first teenager and adult to borrow a book. Both are still actively participating and borrow books regularly. The second annual poetry contest had three categories Adult, Young Adult and Children. Prizes were given for the adult, teenager and child who have read the most books in the past year. The activities throughout the day included craft classes for adults, gifts of classroom materials for teachers and face painting and balloon animal creation and dancing contests for the children. Popcorn and cookies were the morning treats and ice cream and cake was served in the afternoon to over 250 participants. A raffle to support the library was held at the Pelican Eyes Resort Happy Hour and was very well attended. Several San Juan del Sur restaurants, hotels and businesses provided dinners and hotel stays as well as gifts for children and adults. This continued enthusiastic support continues to show the appreciation of this community for the library program
The fifth anniversary celebration, like the library itself ,was a rousing success.
